Newsletter: Ten Reasons to Join a Support Group

1. You aren’t the only one. In most cities, there is a support group for postpartum depression, divorce, parenting special needs children, miscarriage, alcoholism, overeating, and domestic violence, to name a few. Online groups are an alternative for geographically isolated moms.
2. Misery does love company.
3. It’s so annoying when people say “I know how you feel” while actually having no idea at all how you feel.
4. No one at a support group who says, “I know how you feel,” is actually completely clueless.
5. It’s free.
6. Isolation, denial, minimization, wishful hoping won’t make the problem go away, or else it would be gone by now.
7. Seeing someone who has been-there, done-that, and gotten better is inspiring.
8. Support groups know how to find good professional help. They know the good doctors, helpful therapists, treatment facilities, and how to help make the system work for you and your family.
9. People who have walked a mile in your shoes often have really smart things to say about coping and/or recovering.
10. They help, and you deserve it.
